Path to Stardom Passes through West Orange

Wladziu “Walter” Valentino Liberace left his West Allis suburban Milwaukee home in Wisconsin hoping to pursue a promising career as an entertainer. He had no way of knowing what heights he would one day achieve. The road to fame and fortune began for him in West Orange, and the world would come to know him only as Liberace.

In 1941, Marty Horn Sr., the owner of the Pals Cabin restaurant, was looking to hire a pianist for the old Spinet player in the restaurant. Jay Mills, a friend of Horn, was the entertainment agent for Pals at the time. Mills advised Horn that there was a sensational young kid from Milwaukee who was a budding pianist. His name was Walter Liberace, and he was looking to jump-start his career somewhere in the spotlight of New York on the East Coast. Horn took Mills’s advice and proceeded to book Walter for a one-year engagement beginning in January 1941. Living arrangements were made for Walter to reside at the Mills home in nearby Glen Ridge at that time.
